YOP: Week 13

So this past week I completed three small projects...a Stargate keychain...and it's not one of the ones on the list, as those are for someone else...I made this one for my swap partner...I had one side done forever and just finished the other side.  I also made a baby hat with some leftover yarn...I think it is adorable..and will be going to baby Jocelyn, born last Friday...these were posted on Friday.

and I made one of those crochet bunnies that have popped up all over the internet...they are multiplying like rabbits (LOL)

I have worked on my dissertation sweater, the Saturn Sweater, most of this week......I've added a few more rows since this picture.

I was also gifted a new sock pattern and got the perfect yarn in my yarn club, so think I'll be casting on those...as well as the Holden Shawlette....I added those to my lists, but not my WIP list, as although the yarn is wound, I have not actually started them yet...

I spent a lot of time thinking about working on my H's Everyday Socks, but didn't actually work on them...

Stash Acquisition Saturday

It's funny, because so many people are keeping track of their stash...and trying to "stash-down"  Not me...I'm all about increasing that stash!

So I showed you what I got at the North Shore Yarn Crawl here

But not what I've obtained since...so shall we see?

In the mail...the last shipment of the Mad Geek Steampunk club....Clockwork
It's on Bling...with sparkles...and I just happened to have been gifted a sock pattern, Rescue Me, Chin Boy and Show Me the Stars  that calls for sparkles....I think I have a match!!!!!  I'm going with her Dr. Who club next round...already signed up!

And the bag was just perfect and the colors matched each other so well!
Then I had to go shopping for my swap partner and I headed up to my local LYS..New England Yarn and Spindle....purchased a bit for my swap partner...and then purchased these lovelies for myself...
Don't those look like Easter eggs?  How springy beautiful are they!!!!!!!  This is Araucania Yarns Nuble, which is a Merino silk blend.  I believe I'm going to cast on my first lace/shawl project and try the Holden Shawlette with these...I've already wound them....

I also saw a shop sample of socks with this yarn...and decided I needed those stripes...
This is an acrylic/polyester blend...so wonder how the socks will hold up.....

but my So Cazh socks, although I've only worn them three times, already show some wear and tear on the heel..maybe cuz I did the wrong heel...

And finally, when I went to pick up Betty Grace, my model head, she had some $3 grabbag yarns...so I picked up two...I got...
I have no idea what to do with this....any suggestions...it's a Merino Linen mix and only 250 yards..It's very crisp feeling...

and finally
Berroco Sox, which, of course will become socks....

So that is the end of this Stash Acquisition Saturday edition...The end of this month will see a bump of stash acquisition, as the first fiber show of my season is being held...WHOOP!

It's Friday! Whose Got Finishes?

I do!!!!!
This week, I've actually finished up a few things!!!  So here we go...

Stargate keychain...the swap I am participating in is Stargate based...I've had one side of this done forever, so finished the other side and sewed them together..

I also made a spiral hat for one of the Nerd Wars challenges....this is going to a friend who just had a baby girl...

And finally my super awesome Spock bear!  I posted about him yesterday, but what's another picture?? Or two?

And here is with the Tribble I made, too

So what have you finished up lately??? Join up at Wisdom Begins in Wonder, or at Tami's Amis.  Natural Suburbia doesn't have her link up yet....

So Totally Cute

or, if I do say so myself....SUPER AWESOME!!!!  Now you will probably only think this if you are a sci-fi geek....

My dad used to watch Star Trek and I grew up watching it...he also took me to a Star Trek convention when I was about 8 or so....I remember they showed behind the scenes clips and the one I most remember is how they opened the doors.  Two guys stood on either side and pulled the doors open on cue....only sometimes that didn't happen....and the actors would walk into the doors...I think Dr. McCoy (aka DeForest Kelley) was there....and just an aside I LURVES Karl Urban and would love to meet him...I like the new imagined Star Trek, and cannot wait for the next one!  I saw previews the other day when I went to see THE WIZARD....

So Star Trek and The Wizard of Oz were my beginnings into the sci-fi/fantasy worlds.....

And my SUPER AWESOME????

He comes with a Tribble...yes I made a Tribble, too....

And he has made friends..

Isn't he AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yarn Along....and WIPs

It's been awhile since I joined in....I had not been reading...also I cannot write the post before work on Wednesday and some Tuesdays I just didn't feel like it after I got home...Funny thing is, I really don't feel well tonight (Tuesday.)  I've been freezing since I got home and just feeling out of sorts.....but I also have been working on a couple of things....so here goes...

What I'm Reading: The Demi-Monde: Book One by Rod Rees....I got this as a free Friday nook book a couple of weeks ago...I've picked it up and put it down...it is fascinating, but also disturbing.  One of the main characters is Rudolph Heydrich, the mastermind of the Holocaust.  It is a steampunky, apocalyptic type book....

What I'm Crocheting:  My Green Spring is coming along....I am about 2 inches below the arm holes.  I will have the body completed this week.
I am also working on a quick bunny....these have been popping up all over the internet lately....
I posted pics on Monday night and have not worked on it since...

What I'm Knitting: Although I have been carrying around my H's Everyday Socks, I really have not worked on them...they are a bit farther along than the last picture I posted, but not much...

Today I was in a workshop all day...the presenter saw me crocheting during one of our breaks and came over and asked if I did it often and what I was doing ..and then HE says, "Oh your crocheting, I see the one hook.  My wife crochets and knits."  I gave him props for that! His wife and son are visiting this weekend from Arizona...I told him, he had to take her to WEBS, just for the experience..

So what are you reading, crocheting, knitting, weaving, sewing or spinning this week?

I'm linking up with Tami today, as the others don't seem to have theirs up yet...

Wow...Productive Weekend!

Since posting my YOP yesterday, I have two more finishes and another start!  Here's a sneak peek...

Sorry really crappy night picture and slightly blurry....

Plus I worked on my dissertation...watched The Good Witch marathon...and watched the end of Merle Dixon...yuck....

How was your weekend?

YOP: Week 12

I have two finishes this week, but will save them for Friday...I also need to post a couple things to Nerd Wars this weekend.

It was a really tough week at work....state testing....kids freaking out....this coming week, we have one more day of testing, as we had a snow delay last Tuesday....then I have a workshop on Tuesday and there is no school Friday...also this Thursday is the last day of two of my most challenging students.

I planned on spending this weekend crafting and correcting papers....I crafted all day Saturday and completed my Deep Blue Seas Cowl....then I started a totally cute project that deserves it's own post....and a mini-project that goes with it...

I've also put some work into my dissertation sweater....On Sunday I will begin the decreasing under the arms....although I may leave it more boxy, as I prefer the boxier fit than a fitted sweater..

I added a couple of projects to my gifts category....I also need to come up with a swap gift and a couple of ROAK type gifts..I also need to make some more Stargate earrings and a couple of Stargate keychains.

Eastern Point Lighthouse

One of the places in Gloucester that we visited was Eastern Point Lighthouse.  We took a drive over there and then didn't enter, because there were big Private Road, No Access signs...well back at the hotel I did some research and found out you ignore those signs.  They were put up by the "friendly" residents of the area.....but it is actually a public access road.....How Rude!!!  I'm sure that road must be packed in season, but luckily we were there off-season and late in the day....

It was a treacherous walk to the breakwater..
That little path to the left of the Hubs is the walkway...and for several feet you are walking over rocks...

You walk past the lighthouse, but are not permitted on the grounds....the area is still used by the Coast Guard.
Along the fence is that treacherous walkway...

Wilkey came along for the walk too...although he mostly rode in my pocket..he did venture out..

We continued on to the 2, 250 foot breakwater...we were going to walk it to the second smaller lighthouse known as Dog Bar Lighthouse.

It's waaaaayyyyyy out there....see that little bit of white???
We eventually got to the end....it was a long walk...and we had a creepy guy following us farther back...when we turned around to go back, he stopped and turned his back to us and hitched up his sweatpants...he had on slippers that were too big and no socks...folks it was COLD!
And then we headed back....
We could see Boston in the distance
Wilkey did some posing....Here he is watching one of the fishing boats head into harbor..
Psst...that would be creepy guy following us out...we didn't know he was creepy guy yet....

It was a great walk, cold, but a lot of fun....I guess on good days the breakwater is packed with fishermen....but we had it almost to ourselves.....

So if you are in Gloucester, go visit...ignore the Private Road signs..and head on down the road...

North Shore Yarn Crawl 2013

We spent the weekend in Gloucester, Mass...and there will be LOTS of pictures in the next couple of posts...there are a couple of reasons we went to Gloucester this weekend...

1.  I went in 2011 (for TNSYC) and decided I wanted to go back with the Hubs...
2.  It was the Hubs birthday weekend
3.  It was the North Shore Yarn Crawl weekend...

Yup, I celebrated the Hubs birthday with a yarny event....he doesn't mind....

So I was only planning on going to one yarn store...and I stuck to that plan...since I am working on my Green Spring
(A bit more has been added since this picture), I needed to get one more contrast color...The colors I had were too dark, I want it to be more "springy"  I knew Mad Color would be at Coveted Yarn this weekend, so I could get the new color.  I am making the sweater out of her Verity yarn, a nice springy superwash.

I did meet up with Mad Color and Amy from my Nerd Wars Stargate team...excuse the blurry picture...Amy was reaching for more yarn...

So what did I get?  Well I went in for one skein, maybe two....and.....
I guess I was in a blue/green phase....

From the left: Flat Rocks Yarn, unnamed colorway, local to Gloucester
Mad Color: Looking Up (it's more tonal and teal than the picture shows); Indigo-go.  These are both on Verity, not sure which one I'll use yet.  Police Box Blue on Slink
Lorna's Laces: Black Watch Plaid and Beverly (Beverly is my Grandmother's name...lots of reminders of her this weekend)
Lamb's Pride Bulky: three shades of green for a circular felted bag..got the free pattern too..

So not too bad.....the weekend was a blast, but brrrrrrr..cold!!!

YOP: WEEK 11

Wake Up View

It's going to be a beautiful day!

What's in a Name?

Isn't she beautiful?  A local yarn store is going out of business and I purchased this lovely painted lady from her....She will be my hat/cowl/scarf model...

But she needs a name....what do you think?

I'm think Lucy or Clara...or maybe Starla, with that pink, pink hair....she kinda has a retro 20's feel..wonder what the number 1 girls name in the 20's was....maybe Consuelo after Consuelo Vanderbilt?

Here she is posing with the flowers I received from my friends at school because of my Grandma.

The Hubs thinks she's creepy.....

Grandma

On Sunday I woke up to a Facebook message from a cousin that she was on her way to the hospital, as our Grandma had been admitted. I called her, she was a mess..Grandma had pretty much raised her....Grandma passed away at 5:00 my time...

Grandma moved to the Houston area about 24 years ago.  I live in Connecticut, and right now can't take the trip to Houston...so I am experiencing it all through my little cousin.

Grandma taught me to crochet....and she used to make us crochet slippers every Christmas...my first completed project was a GIANT red, white and blue granny square afghan that I gave to her....She had it for many years...not sure what happened to it...

Although I hadn't been close to her in many years, last saw her three years ago...when I was younger and she lived here I spent a lot of time with her...spending weekends at her house....
My Grandma at my wedding with my Uncle Frank

My cousins and I in my Grandma's kitchen before they all moved to Texas.  I am in contact with the girl, Kerry.  The two boys are brothers.  At once time or another, we all lived with Grandma.  In fact, the youngest boy int he picture, Jessie, was still living with Grandma.

Grandma you were loved and you will be missed...

(and I don't think she wants this posted, as it keeps disappearing and this is the third time I've reposted it!)

Looking Good!

I wore them yesterday...so worth it...comfy, squooshy...and they look good in the shoes...

Sock DRAMA....

So those Business Casual Socks that I chose to join along in the KAL were not a terribly hard pattern...but I had drama with them from the start...OR from the THREE starts I had...yep, I frogged those puppies THREE times!....
I couldn't get the C2B or C2F thing down...but then I created a cheat sheet....It looked like this..

And I used it to keep track of my place in the pattern...it worked!  I had a system!!!!  Then I got to the heel flap...WOW!  This went fast...great onto the gusset/turning the heel deal...

(Well, when I got to to the second sock I realized I did not do the heel flap correctly..I just knit one side and purled the other...what's that called?  Stockinette or Garter stitch..I have to look them up to know which is which)  So now I don't have a very sturdy heel...oh well!  I AM NOT ripping those out again!  I'll just keep some yarn put away for repairs...

And onto the foot...where I lost 2 stitches...I have no idea where they went to...I looked..I counted..I re-counted..they were just gone..vanished..in the blink of an eye...AND I twisted stitches the wrong way...so it was RIPPING again....and I still couldn't find those stitches....(I shouldn't work on socks for hours straight into the night)

FINALLY I finished the first sock...it fit, a tad too big, but all my socks seem to be (I've got weird feet)...yeah..one sock down!!!
I started the second and was humming along...I had my system....it worked..I got the stitches going the right way..things looked great!  Got to the heel flap and realized my error....Shrugged shoulders and kept going...was not going to be able to do anything about the error....

Turned the heel....kept knitting...it's going great.....two repeats...almost done....kitchener stitch..BAM!  weave in ends....

Put socks together .........and OH NO!!!!
Do you see what I see???????????  Oh F(expletives)K!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Put that sucker away...go take a shower...eat some lunch..watch some tv.....then cut that seam open....

Rip the toe all the way back....loose LOTS of stitches....fiddle with the numbers....royally screw up the top crossover.....get back to the toe....make a mess of the Kitchener Stitch...and it is done!!!

GLORY HALLELUJAH!!!!!  It is DONE!!!!!!!
The right one is the second sock...it is still a tad smaller than the first, but actually fits better....you can see the major mistake on the front crossover, but I don't care....It's done...

I will wear them...as I think they are still gorgeous..yarn..color..pattern..and a lot of hours of work went into them...and people aren't going to be able to see the mistakes in my shoes....

But they were a learning experience! And there are prizes!  I wonder if I can get one for tenacity???

(And the final drama...man it's Sunday...I need to go take a shower to shave my legs to take sock pictures..just in case!)

YOP: Week 10

Not too much going on this week....it just was once of those weeks...I came home sick one day...and did nothing but watch tv...Yesterday I did finish my Business Casual socks...there was much DRAMA involved in these...I posted a picture, but seriously, you should come back and read the post about the tomorrow....as I said..DRAMA!!!!!

I frogged two projects and restarted one of them.....

Got some upsetting news this morning, so in a holding pattern...

That's about ti for me this week...how was your crafting week?

Stash Enhancement Saturday - Big Edition

No real crafting this week, but did some acquiring this week....

I did mention the yarn I bought when we went away and I visited two yarn shops in my last Stash Acquisition Saturday post.  I also mentioned my latest Random Fandom..To The Batcave..So what are the latest enhancements to the STASH???  I really should write it in capitals, because it is so LARGE....

Well let's see....the very latest was a visit to a local yarn shop..that is GOING OUT OF BUSINESS...which always sucks...it's in the next town over...and I didn't frequent it often, as they tended to just have basic yarn and supplies...I would visit the one in my town for those, plus other goodies she stocks...Funny thing is I heard about this going out of business from another LYS owner an hour away, when I went to pick up the yarn she held for me...

There is not much of a sale going on yet...things will go more on sale as the month progresses....but she didn't have a ton of stock either...there was a 25% off table, so I got 5 skeins of Tahki Yarn Rio..it's Alpaca/Merino/Silk...It's going to be a winter hat....
I also picked up one skein of Cascade Yarns Venezia..which is a Merino Silk....this will be a cowl.

Last Sunday I headed down to Madison Wool in Madison, CT...Dayna is a savvy shop owner and she posts regular updates of new yarns on Facebook....and, of course, I saw one I liked..so she held it for me...Fable Fibers, a MCN yarn in White Birch!
I also decided I needed a red beret....so I got some Aussi Sock in Cherry Tomato
In the Mail????

I received the Latest Random Fandom...My Transformation is supposed to be a dignified experience! inspired by Ambassador Deleen of Babylon 5.
I also purchased some Nerd Girl Yarns, when she was having a one day sale in January...here goes!
Believing Takes Practice (not on sale) Inspired by A Wrinkle in Time
Extremely Silly Hats
How Dare You Defy Your Master (Harry Potter)
24 Hour Pork

Not on Sale...but been wanting it was Girl on Fire
I just found out that there is a Katniss sock pattern...Oh My!  I'd have to think about those and maybe plan them....I'd love for the dark to be on the foot and the lighter colors climbing the leg...

Also in the Mail was my latest from the Mad Geek Club...I chose the Steampunk option this round...this month was Beware the Kraken
Last months was Verdigris
I've been a bit surprised at the colors, as Steampunk to me, means more dark and brooding...but I don't dislike the colors and it's always fun to see someone else's interpretation...I'll be seeing Mad Color in person next weekend at the North Shore Yarn Crawl....she said she has a new sock yarn I'll like...so I've been holding off buying online from her, as I do tend to see her every couple of months at a Fiber show of some kind....

I also received a swap package this month with two balls of an unknown yarn company
It's slightly felted....I'll probably make a hat with it...and donate it...

I think that is about it.....as mentioned next weekend, I'm off on a Yarn Crawl, so they'll be more stash acquisition.....it makes me happy...
